When selecting a mask for yourself the most important things are fit, comfort and easy adjustment. A mask has a good fit when it seats comfortably on the face, seals well and does not leak.
All quality scuba masks have a silicone skirt, the softer and more comfortable the better. Do not confuse softness with thinness of the skirt material. The best masks have a thicker, more durable skirt while maintaining comfort. Once the style has been established fitting the mask is the most crucial part.
Fitting Your Mask Correctly
1. Looking forward place the mask gently on the face ensuring the mask skirt is not folded and is not obstructed by hair. Without using the strap inhale through the nose. The properly fitting mask will draw onto the face and stay on without being held by the strap or hands.
2. If the mask seals, place the strap over the head to hold in place. The strap is not required to be tight, but just tight enough to hold it in place. The mask should fit without touching the tip or bridge of your nose, or being uncomfortable in the area between your nose and upper lip.
3. Trial the adjustment to see how easy it is to tighten and release.
