Sea 5km from Totaranui, adjacent to Abel Tasman National Park, the third marine reserve to be created alongside a national park. It covers an area of 1835 hectares, extending 1852m offshore from the mean highwater mark of Tonga Island, and the coast between Awaroa Head and the headland separating Bark Bay and Mosquito Bay.
From the land the best snorkeling is among the rocks between Tonga Quarry and Foul Point. Scuba diving on reef systems in the north of the reserve, about 15m deep. Sparse cover of seaweeds. Pink algae coats much of the rock, abundant kina and turban shells. Caves and crevices conceal crayfish and conger eel. Wrasses, blue cod, snapper, terakihi, and moki. Also dolphins, seal, blue penguins.
