One beacon down from Wellers rock is the outstandingly
colourful wall at Otakou. It is 300 metres long and has an
average depth of 22-24 metres. The wall runs in line with
the tidal currents coming in and out of the harbour, which
means the marine life there has ample opportunity to feed
on the incoming nutrients. Hence the reason why this dive
site has such an awesome display of colour and everything
seems to be bigger and brighter! If you want to experience an exhilarating drift dive, this
site is excellent. One truly has the sensation of 'flying through the water' on a fully
flooding or ebbing tide. Crayfish are hiding in the rocks and southern pigfish swim
alongside banded wrasse and blue cod. In the sandy area at the end of the wall there
are often paddle crabs running sideways across the sand to keep you amused while you
do your safety stop.
I can see you but can you see me?' This beautiful
octopus has its tentacles still camouflaged but is about to
flee. Often it is possible to swim right by without notising
the resting place of the octopus.
