Located to the North-east of Bushrangers Bay is a rocky outcrop
called Lou's Rock that is accessible by boat. This island
sometimes known as Bass Point Island has some of the most
diverse marine life to be found on the NSW coast.
The southern side of the island slopes down steeply underwater,
levelling out onto sand at a depth of 30 metres. Gorgonians and
sponges grow out from this steep rocky slope feeding on
micro-organisms in the current whilst sheltering a large array of
fish.
The northern side of the island has a shallow flat kelp-strewn reef
about 6 metres deep. The bottom recedes gently to 12 metres
with gutters eroded through the rock and then steeply to 30 metres
on the sand with extensive growth in the area.
This site can be the location for many dives depending on the prevailing
seas and is ideal for a drift when the current in running.
Off the eastern tip of the island, separated by a 50 metre gap is a
pinnacle, Lou’s reef, that comes to within 10 metres of the surface.
This reef would challenge the island and the humps for the best dive site
in NSW. Dropping to 30 metres all sides of this pinnacle are covered in
thick growth with the southern side being the best.
This site is a must.
