The sites here abound with schools of fish, both large and small. Olive seasnakes are regularly seen in the area, along with
white tip reef sharks, turtles and even the occasional manta ray. The reef here is mainly patches of reef, rather than walls, with
depths averaging 15 metres. There are a couple of deeper dive sites up to 35 metres. We have quite a few sites that only we
dive in the Bay. Some of our 30+ sites: Fish pit As the name implies, this site just buzzes with fish! It is very prone to current
so can only be dived on the slack tide. The site itself is relatively small and is sort of bowl shaped with sand in the middle and
reef running around the outside. Here divers can see masses of different species of fish, including big schools
of sweetlips and snapper. There are some interesting overhangs with fan corals, nudibranchs and some of
the more secretive reef fish. A very large moray eel resides here and is sometimes seen by divers. During
the winter months, humpback whales cruise over the site!
Blizzard ridge A site up to 14 metres deep that runs roughly parallel to the shore. It is an easy site to dive,
featuring seasnakes, big schools of fish hovering on top of the reef and lots of things to explore in the
overhangs along the ridge. Manta rays are exciting spottings here. We have photographers from all over the
world visit the area, and one site we always take them to is Blizzard Ridge. There is some of the best marine
life you will see anywhere, such as moray eels, octopus, cleaner shrimp, moorish idols, potato cod and a species of nudibranch
that appears to be endemic to Lighthouse Bay!
Northwest reef
This reef is situated off the northern tip of the Cape and because of this, can be subject to strong currents and
swells. Conditions have to be ideal to dive here, and when that happens, wow! what a great dive. The site
itself is a wall, with a big gutter through the middle. From this gutter you can look up and see the waves breaking overhead!
There are some large overhangs and swim-throughs and it is not uncommon to see white tip reef sharks or even the occasional
bronze whaler. Big schools of batfish seem to hang out here, and troops of chevroned barracuda frequently swim through.
There is a lot of colour and variety at this site, making it the number one choice when weather and tides permit.
Helga's tunnels, Horseshoe reef
Two of our deep dive sites located out from the Lighthouse. These sites are absolutely amazing with some
excellent swim-throughs and overhangs. Glimmering bait fish congregate in their thousands in the tunnels and
sometimes you have to wave them away to find your way through! Around the tunnels predators such as
trevally, mackeral, coral trout and mangrove jacks wait for smaller fish to come their way! With the top of the reef in 20
metres, and maximum depths up to 35 metres, these sites are strictly for experienced divers or students accompanied by an
instructor.
