This name appeared for the first time in 1942, when Captain Cousteau and the engineer E . Gagnan first presented their diving regulator known at the time as the CG45.

The Captain had wanted to call it the "poumon automatique a air comprime pour la plongee" (automatic compressed air diving lung), which was translated into English quite simply as.....AQUA LUNG.
